During my brief stay in Canterbury, I visited the Foundry Brew Pub on Stour Street, just behind my hotel. It is a fantastic pub-come-brewery with a huge selection of beer to try (16 or 17 I believe they have on tap - all brewed on site) and in our mid-morning exploration, we wandered into the pub (COVID safe and well organised) and I had a half of their IPA (read this review here). We then started our pre-dinner drinks here as well.
Little did I know, or read properly, that they offer a 'taster tray', five different 3rds of their range for £6.95 (£1.30 for any beer over 6% - fair enough). My eyes filled with excitement. My pregnant wife sighed with pain as she had seen this on the menu previously, but had forgotten to mention it to me. I wonder why. Anyway, I chose five of their range and away we went.
This is the third beer I sampled: Red Rye.
This rye beer has a very interesting smell that was new to me, but very welcoming. It is quite hard to pinpoint - for some reason sherry springs to mind (but I haven't actually smelt sherry since I was about 13 making homemade cocktails in a Nike sports bottle with Mike Wilkinson et al, often resulting in a sad end to the night) but in reality it has a slightly spicy air, mingled with a strong orange zest smell.
It is the mid-colour beer from the third picture, showing a red/orange colour with a thick, rich head. To taste it has a fruity taste, mainly being orange coming through. It is perfectly carbonated and as the fruit makes way, a slight bittering arrives to remind you that are drinking a well-hopped beer.
This is one that took me by surprise and to be honest if I hadn't tried what comes next, I'd be my favourite of the set!
A good beer - would definitely have again.
7/10.
Cheers,
-Ben.
